Taking Breaks is Crutial to Your Mental Health, and You Deserve to Take One!

When was the last time you decided to take a break? I think for some women that isn’t even a real question.. or at least it doesn’t always seem like it. With the constant feeling of needing to be successful. always trying to get to that next step or that next big idea, it really does make life feel like one big chore. Im not saying that I don’t enjoy creating or living up to my full potential but sometimes ya girl just needs some time to say F it and LIVE! Back in May I decided I wanted to take a step back, mainly from my social media platforms associated with my business and blogging. I was feeling overwhelmed with a lot of the things that used to really bring me joy. it honestly had me questioning if being in the beauty space was what I even wanted anymore. When you see so many people doing well around you, and how hard your trying to make it to a place where life seems to flow a bit better its easy to become discouraged and distracted.

Thats what I thought my need for breathing room was, laziness and a distraction. Because quite honestly, we live in the day and age of the Hustle Mentality. The time of seemingly rapid success, grinding none stop and everyone around us is screaming “I don’t get tired”. But quiet as it’s kept, there’s a large group of us off in the corner somewhere saying “Sis, we a little tired!” and feeling bad about it none the less. Society, social media, family and friends can all contribute to the thought in us that says we haven’t done enough there for we need to constantly be thinking of ways to propel ourselves to that next step and it actually needed to happen by 12pm yesterday!

This is why for the first time in a long time, even though I was scared, I only wanted to focus my attention on having a good time and connecting with things that made me feel good. I knew the universe and I were in sync because my good sis Megan Thee Stallion got the culture on the Hot Girl Summer wave just about the same time I was shutting down my lap top and switching over to my personal instagram. This hiatus was much needed but it represented something more for me as well. I was giving myself permission to have fun, be free and do whatever the hell I wanted for the summer without apology! I only took freelance appointments when I felt mentally prepared to handle it, I hung out with friends and made memories, made time to go and see my family and gave myself time to process the fact that I didn’t know what I wanted when it came to my career anymore and instead of trying to figure out ways to fix it I jus let life be whatever it decided to be at the moment.

Every now and then I would tell myself that I needed to get back to taking things more seriously and the longer I was gone, people would forget about me. NOT TRUE! The truth is, clients still reached out to book. People still read my blogs, emails continued to come and a few new opportunities walked right up to my door and KNOCKED! Taking time for my mental health and what I knew I needed didn’t interrupt what God had planned for me, in fact I believe it gave me room to move in the direction he had planned for me instead of trying to make my own way.

The point Im trying to make here is that it is okay to take a break girl, it’s okay to live life instead of just existing in it. If you truly believe what is for you no man can take away, then close that laptop when you feel overwhelmed put on a face mask and be still. You’re doing fine, breaks are a good thing and don’t let social media pressure you into thinking it’s hustle 24/7. Enjoy that growth you’ve had, enjoy that money you’ve made and treat yourself a little too!

With only a few months left in 2019 I’ve managed to hit some of my goals and some of them have changed. I’ve moved onto bigger and better things in so many ways Now that I’m back and so much better, I hope we can continue on the journey of being great and beautiful together!
