8 of the Biggest Skincare Trends on Social Media

One thing I’ve always found hilarious about beauty trends is, many of them have been around for a while but once you give them a cute new nickname, everyone flocks to it! I guess that’s why it’s called a trend, right?

I know we all love a good skincare tip or hack and since the explosion of platforms like Pinterest, Instagram and Tik Tok, new beauty trends have been popping up left and right. Now I will be the first to tell you that not all skincare trends I have come across are my favorite, I mean some of them are down right crazy. This doesn’t mean we can’t have a little fun and learn something new in the process though. Plus, if the end result is flourishing beautiful skin its pretty much a no brainer.

I’ve complied a list of 8 of the biggest skincare trends on social media and some of them may surprise you, lets get into it.

  1. Skin Flooding

Skin flooding is such an intense name but its actually pretty simple and you’ve most likely already been doing it, and if so, kudos to you for being ahead of the game! Skin flooding is when you apply your most hydrating products, usually ones that contain hyaluronic acid, from thickest to thinnest so that your skin is nice and juicy before you seal it off with moisturizer. Because hyaluronic acid hydrates deep within the layers of the skin, this method is awesome for maximizing moisture and balancing dry skin.

2. Misting

There is nothing like popping a nice hydrating face mist into the fridge before applying it to your face, the most refreshing skincare hack I've ever used honestly! The trend of misting is similar to that of skin flooding in terms of hydration but for this method we are using a hydrating facial mist in between each step in our routine. For some skin types, specifically my oily pals, this could be a hit or miss trend. While facial mists are very lightweight in texture, multi layering in this way will definitely make you feel and see just how dewy skin can get. Applying a face mist before serums and moisturizer is a great way to ensure skin is damp and primed to receive the full benefits of treatment products, so I will personally say this trend is one I plan to continue using even if i’m not misting between every step.

3. Skinimalism

How many of us have more than 10 skincare products in our bathroom cabinet? Dont be scared, raise your hand if it applies! Skinimalism is the beauty trend that is all about saving you time and money. This trend focuses on having a more simple, intentional skincare routine that’s main goal is supporting the overall health of skin without overloading your routine with products you don’t need. With so much influence around skin and beauty products it’s easy to become obsessed with having the latest and greatest but it can also be a gateway into skin irritation and product overload. Skinimalism brings us back to our core and refocuses attention only on consuming what we need and leaving the rest. I am all the way here for it!

4. Barrier Strengthening

A strong skin barrier is a major key to having success with anything skin related. Our protective barrier does the hard work of keeping us balanced, warding off skin irritants and allowing the products we use to really work their magic. For the past 3 years barrier strengthening products have been all over the internet, this trend really took off when consumers and skincare professionals began having open dialog via social media, about how over exfoliating was killing so many people skincare success. I will be the first to admit that this trend is one I’m glad to see still around and growing, barrier strengthening products should be a staple in everyones skincare routine. It’s also easy to incorporate into a daily routine, barrier strengthening products are applied once skin is cleaned and before any acids or treatment products. Layering in this way can also protect the skin from adverse effects of stronger actives.

5. Slugging

Slugging may be the trend with the weirdest name but its more familiar than most of us realize. If you grew up anything like me then you had a mother who completely slathered your face in ointment or vaseline before going almost anywhere. This was done in an effort to lock in moisture and ensure we didn’t get ashy throughout the day. Today this occlusive heavy trend is called slugging and it’s most popular amongst those with dry skin or those prone to irritation. With slugging, the key is to use an occlusive to seal in hydration from serums and moisturizer applied before hand. Slugging is typically done in a nighttime routine at least an hour before bed to give the product time to absorb into the skin before laying down for the night. Slugging can also help with irregular texture and helping skin appear more plump during the day!

6. Multi-tasking Products

With big trends like skinimalism encouraging us to scale back its no wonder that multi tasking skincare products have been a huge hit. Brands like The Ordinary have been known for creating simple serum formulas that highlight one or 2 specific ingredients but with so many epic ingredients being brought about for skin health these days, people are wanting a bit more bang for their buck. This is were multi-tasking products come into play! Not only do these products help to streamline your routine but they make being consistent much easier. Having oily skin that is prone to hyperpigmentation and congestion myself, I love having one or two products in my routine that hit multiple targets at once. Also, being consistent with these products can lead to seeing results in different areas more quickly.

7. Skin Cycling

This is the one y’all! Skin cycling is the solution to self induced skin irritation. Think of skin cycling like intermittent fasting but for your face! You’d alternate different actives throughout your weekly routine, taking a break at least twice a week to focus on barrier strengthening and hydration. The trend of skin cycling became popular via TikTok however Dermatologists have been encouraging us to take this more gentle approach to skincare for a while now. To get started with skin cycling you need a chemical exfoliant, retinol and a good moisturizer or barrier repair serum. When doing your nighttime routine use your exfoliation method one night and retinol the next. The two nights after that will be the rest and repair portion of cycling, allowing your skin to recover from the previous nights events and ensuring no over exfoliation in your future.

8. Virtual Consultations

I discovered virtual skin consultations during lockdown 2020 and was blown away by the overwhelming response of people really looking for services like these. While professional skin services are a wonderful thing, many of us can’t keep up with monthly facials, so naturally nailing the perfect homecare routine becomes the next best option. Virtual skin consultations give you the opportunity to meet one on one with a professional for feedback on your skin concerns as well as product recommendations, right from the comfort of home. This also opens up your pool of options when it comes to estheticians, some of your favorite skin care pro’s (including myself) offer virtual options. Virtual services are definitely going to be trending for a long time, jump on this if you haven’t already!
