Anti Aging Skincare Myths

Everyone wants to live a long exciting life but no one wants the wrinkles that come along with it. I get it honestly, Im not totally sure I want to look like what I’ve been through either! I personally don’t like the term “anti aging” as it pertains to skincare, the idea that a skincare product or procedure can fully reverse the visible signs of aging for all people just doesn’t sit well in my spirit.

Healthy aging is more my speed, the goal with caring for ones skin should always be to keep it at optimal health first and treatment/correction comes second. Throughout the years I have purchased my fair share of anti aging products and as an esthetician I’ve sold tons as well as given countless pieces of advise on how to age gracefully.

Today we are going to debunk a few myths I’ve had the displeasure of encountering over the years and give you the real truth about anti aging products and practices, after all best way to make positive choices for your skin is to have the right information.

Create The Perfect Skincare Routine!

My beginner friendly skincare ebook is your first step in creating the perfect skincare routine. You’ll learn to identify and treat skin conditions, choose products based on your skins type and set your routine up for getting the most out of your corrective treatments!

  1. You Only Need Anti Aging Products If You’re Over 30

This couldn’t be further from the truth and I honestly wish a very painful hangnail on whoever decided to start this rumor. Products labeled anti aging usually contain ingredients that help support collagen production, elasticity, barrier strength, water retention and radiance boosters. None of these things are something you need to wait until your 30’s to incorporate into a routine, in fact you’d be doing yourself a favor by starting them sooner than later. Healthy aging is all about preventative measures, beating the wrinkles and fine lines to the punch you could say. I suggest using products that are heavy with ceramides, peptides, antioxidants and fatty acids as early as 20 years old for ultimate skin health!

2. Anti Aging Products Cause Premature Aging

This is one myth that I usually hear from people who are looking to start adding retinol into their skincare routine. Retinol is a derivative of vitamin A and it plays a key role in helping skin cells regenerate, retinol is more commonly found in over the counter products. Some of the common side effects with RetinA as a whole are dryness, redness and scaling of the skin. The drying effect that can be experienced with some retinol formulations may cause epidermal sliding which is seperation from the dermis. This basically means that the drying side effect could cause skin to become weaker and things like wrinkles or loss of elasticity looks more pronounced. To combat this we simply need to choose formulas of retinol that have lower percentages and are made with ingredients that help counteract dryness as well as boosts barrier strength. You must also have a skincare routine that supports your treatments. Gentle cleansing, hydration and moisturizer to combat water loss is key to success with these products.

3. Moisturizer Is The Same As Under Eye Cream

This is just false. Under eye skin is the thinnest skin on the face, which is why it needs products formulated specifically for that area and very delicate care meaning no tugging and pulling on the skin. While moisturizers do help to prevent water loss and helps skin look brighter over time, it won’t be enough to counteract dark circles, crows feet or skin sagging on and around the eye lid area. Ingredients like vitamin c and peptides help to brighten and strengthen under eye skin, eye creams also vary in texture depending on the intended use and are specifically made to be safe for use close to the eye. If all you have at the time is moisturizer by all means make due with what you have, but know that the intention of specific skincare products should alway be considered especially when you are looking to correct and treat conditions like darkness and under eye bags.

4. One Product Will Reverse All Signs of Aging

No one skincare product will ever reverse all signs of skin aging. When it comes to your skin it is a collaborative effort with the products in your skincare routine and consistency with usage. These products should be chosen based on your skins current state, skin conditions you’re experiencing and the goals you want to achieve with corrective treatments. Once fine lines and wrinkles settle in the skin is becomes harder over time to demising their appearance, that’s why it’s important to start a healthy aging skincare routine early on no matter your skins type. Focus on serums for anti aging benefits as they are more concentrated and remain on the skin for a longer period, and use the rest of your routine to support those serums by keeping skin hydrated and primed for preventing water loss.
