Exfoliation: What, Why and When

“Sooo do I need to be exfoliating because I always see people talking about it!?”. The short answer here is yes sis, you need to be exfoliating regularly and you’ll be much happier with your skin when you start. Exfoliation is an essential step in everyones skincare routine, no matter the skin type or condition you may be experiencing at the moment. Of course like most things in life exfoliating isn’t always the easiest task, especially when you aren’t even sure exactly what the hell it even is or how it works. So, because I’m such a good friend I’m going to quickly break down for you

  • What exfoliation is and how it works

  • The benefits

  • How often you should exfoliate

Before we get started I just want to make mention that there are different levels of exfoliation and different ways the treatment can be administered, things such as Microdermabrasion and Chemical Peels should only be done by a licensed professional who has done a thorough evaluation of your skin and can help you make the best treatment choices. These methods are more intense and can cause serious damage when done by someone who for lack of a better term, doesn’t know what they're doing! Okay, lets begin..

What is Exfoliation and how does it work?

Exfoliation is defined as the process of removing excess accumulations of dead skin cells from the Corneum layers of the epidermis, aka the outer layers of skin. The removal of dead skin cells is extremely important for skin maintenance because it speeds up something called Cell Turn Over (CTO) which is the rate at which dead skin cells are shed and new, fresh cells come to the surface. CTO slows down as we age, from about every 21 days in your 20’s to about every 45 days in your 30’s and so on as we get older.

What are the benefits of exfoliation?

Aside from helping to speed up the cell turn over process, exfoliating on a regular basis has some really transformative as well as preservative benefits. It will help

  • The appearance of fine lines and wrinkles

  • Dull and dry skin

  • Skins elasticity and firmness

  • Texture and pigmentation

  • Hydration and moisture retention

  • Clogged pores

How often should I exfoliate?

The answer to this question will vary from person to person and thats because its based on your skin type specifically ( If you need help figuring out your skins type click HERE ). For more dry and sensitive skin types exfoliating 1-2 times per week is more than enough, the last thing you want is to irritate or further dry out the skin. Now for the oily girls like myself, 2-3 times per week is typically perfect for us. Oily skin is prone to congestion and breakouts so keeping those pores clear of excess oil and dead skin is crucial.

See, not as scary or complicated as you might’ve thought. There are obviously many benefits to exfoliating the skin and if you’re on that heathy, glowing skin journey I suggest you try it!
